The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation recently announced the 2025 MacArthur “Genius” Award winners, recognizing 22 individuals for their exceptional contributions across various fields. Each recipient is awarded $800,000, disbursed over five years, which they can utilize for personal and professional endeavors.
2025 MacArthur “Genius” Award Winners
- Hahrie Han: Political scientist focused on fostering connections across societal differences.
- Tommy Orange: Novelist acclaimed for his works that illuminate Native American communities, particularly in Oakland, California.
- Matt Black: Photographer noted for capturing the realities of poverty in America through striking black and white imagery.
Recognition Process
The selection process for the MacArthur Fellows is extensive and based on peer recommendations. According to Marlies Carruth, director of the MacArthur Fellows program, this year’s cohort reflects themes of empathy and community engagement, albeit without a specific overarching theme.
Personal Stories of Transformation
Recipients often express surprise upon receiving the fellowship, as they do not apply for it. For instance, Nabarun Dasgupta, an epidemiologist at the University of North Carolina, learned of his award shortly after a significant loss in his professional life. His contributions to harm reduction, including establishing a drug testing program, highlight the profound impact of his work on community health.
Tonika Lewis Johnson, an artist from Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood, also shared her experience. Upon receiving the call, she was driving and declined to pull over, while her work addresses racial segregation through documentation and beautification projects in her community.
Significance of the Award
For Ángel F. Adames Corraliza, an atmospheric scientist from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, the award symbolizes resilience and talent originating from Puerto Rico. His research on tropical weather patterns is poised to enhance forecasting in critical areas, a contribution of great public interest despite challenges in funding.
The 2025 MacArthur “Genius” Award winners represent a diverse array of talents who are committed to effecting change within their fields. The generous financial support provided by the MacArthur Foundation allows them to explore new ideas, pursue innovative projects, and continue their impactful work.
