Highway 417 Lane Closures Disrupt Commuters’ Journeys

Recent lane closures on Highway 417 have significantly impacted commute times for Ottawa drivers, particularly those using the western route. The construction is part of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) western expansion. It has forced lane reductions between Woodroffe Avenue and Pinecrest Road, near the future Pinecrest LRT station.
Impact on Commute Times
Many drivers are reporting longer travel times. For example, Brandon Palen, a plumber residing in Ottawa’s west end, noted that his usual 20 to 25-minute drive has extended to 40 to 45 minutes. He states that while morning traffic is manageable, the evening rush is becoming increasingly frustrating.
Other commuters have similarly expressed their discontent. Liane Orsi, who travels from Carleton Place, commented that her commute has jumped to about an hour and a half, compared to the typical 35 to 45 minutes. Syed Huq, commuting from Kanata to downtown, indicated that he sometimes spends over an hour on the road. He described the situation as “really crazy.”
Current Lane Closure Details
- Lane reductions in both eastbound and westbound directions.
- Closures will last until July 28.
- Construction includes new signage being installed by the Ministry of Transportation.
- The eastbound on-ramp from southbound Pinecrest Road is currently closed.
Additional Disruptions
In addition to the Highway 417 lane closures, construction work closer to downtown at Bank Street and Riverside Drive is complicating alternative routes for west-end commuters. There have also been ongoing operational challenges with OC Transpo throughout the year, which further affect public transit options.
City and OC Transpo Responses
The city has stated that these lane closures are necessary for the upcoming LRT expansion. Jacelyn Daigle, deputy director of the rail construction program, confirmed that efforts are being made to maintain three lanes of traffic wherever feasible. She also mentioned that discussions with the Ministry of Transportation are ongoing to explore solutions to manage congestion effectively.
As this construction progresses, commuters in Ottawa are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, taking into consideration potential delays on Highway 417.
