Lithuania Approves Autonomous Driving; Tesla Responds Immediately

Lithuania has recently made significant strides in the realm of autonomous driving by becoming one of the first countries in Europe to approve autonomous vehicle operation, albeit with certain restrictions. This development aims to enhance road safety and improve driving comfort, particularly on long journeys or during monotonous traffic conditions.

Lithuania’s Regulatory Framework for Autonomous Driving

Minister of Transport Juras Taminskas emphasized that while the technology is advanced, it does not equate to full autonomy. The responsibility of driving remains with the operator, who must continually monitor traffic conditions and be ready to take control if necessary.

The approval is based on the European Parliament and Council Regulation (EU) 2018/858, which allows member states to recognize temporary type approvals issued by other EU countries for new transport technologies. This enables Lithuania to implement Level 2 (SAE Level 2) systems, which assist drivers by automating certain functions such as lane-keeping and speed regulation without replacing the driver’s responsibility.

Implementation Based on Dutch Experience

  • Lithuania is adopting these systems based on assessments conducted in the Netherlands.
  • These driving assistance technologies have already been tested in real traffic scenarios in the Netherlands.

This move is considered a progressive step toward modernizing and enhancing road transportation while maintaining a clear principle of driver accountability. Lithuania aims to be at the forefront of European Union member states by not only enabling advanced driving assistance systems but also developing a secure, innovative regulatory model for their deployment.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

Minister Juras Taminskas signed a memorandum with his counterparts from Latvia and Estonia in Tallinn, which aims to strengthen collaboration on autonomous transport development in the region.

Following this agreement, Tesla announced that drivers in Lithuania would soon be able to utilize their fully autonomous driving feature. Lithuania is now the second European country to receive regulatory approval for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature.

Tesla’s Implementation Timeline

  • Deployment of the FSD feature will begin in the coming days through a remote software update.
  • Tesla is seeking further regulatory approvals for system deployment in other European nations.

Tesla vehicles come equipped with advanced driver assistance capabilities, and features can be further enhanced with optional packages available for the new Model S, Model 3, Model X, and Model Y. Additional functionalities will be activated upon receiving local regulatory approvals.

About a month ago, Tesla invited drivers in Vilnius to register for test drives using the FSD function, highlighting a commitment to advancing autonomous driving technology in Lithuania.
