Emirates Prepares for Post-DXB Era with Dubai South Expansion

Emirates Airlines is embarking on significant expansions as part of its forward-looking strategy. The airline recently initiated the construction of a groundbreaking engineering complex at Dubai South. This innovative facility is projected to be the world’s most advanced aviation maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) center.

Dubai South Expansion: Key Highlights

The new complex will cover an area of 1.1 million square meters and includes impressive features:

  • The world’s only hangar capable of accommodating 28 wide-body aircraft simultaneously.
  • The largest dedicated landing gear workshop worldwide.
  • 77,000 square meters of repair workshops.
  • 380,000 square meters allocated for storage and logistics.
  • Two specialized paint hangars for aircraft.

Anticipated to be completed by 2030, this project will bolster heavy maintenance operations currently managed at DXB. Sheikh Ahmed emphasized that this initiative represents a strategic advancement in Dubai’s aviation aspirations.

Investment in Engine Maintenance

In tandem with the expansion of its engineering capabilities, Emirates is also enhancing its engine maintenance infrastructure. Recently, the airline committed to a $300 million investment to develop the Emirates Engine Maintenance Centre (EEMC).

In May, Emirates inked an agreement with GE Aerospace to improve repair capabilities for GE90 and GP7200 engines utilized in its Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 fleets. Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was established with Rolls-Royce at the Dubai Airshow 2025. This agreement will facilitate maintenance operations for Trent 900 engines beginning in 2027.

Aerospace Manufacturing Initiatives

Emirates is also making strides in aerospace manufacturing. An agreement with Safran was signed during the Dubai Airshow 2025 to establish a seat manufacturing plant. This facility, spanning 20,000 to 25,000 square meters, will initially produce Business and Economy Class seats as part of Emirates’ retrofit program, with a completion target set for the fourth quarter of 2027.

New Pilot Training and Hospitality Facilities

To enhance operational readiness, Emirates opened a new flight crew training center in September 2025. This $135 million facility features:

  • Six full-flight simulator bays.
  • Increased training capacity for Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X pilots.
  • 45,000 additional annual training hours.

This new center significantly expands pilot training capacity by 54%. Furthermore, the Emirates Centre of Hospitality Excellence, launched in October 2025, focuses on elevating cabin crew service standards. The $8 million facility encompasses:

  • Specialized training restaurants and lounges.
  • High-tech classrooms.
  • Fine dining and wine training programs.

Logistics and Future Technologies

Emirates Flight Catering is also upgrading its infrastructure. In July 2025, its subsidiary Linencraft commenced construction on a Dh160 million facility to meet rising demand from both the hospitality and aviation sectors.

In exploring future logistics technologies, Emirates SkyCargo has partnered with LODD Autonomous to investigate drone-powered cargo deliveries. This collaboration aims to assess the viability of using unmanned aircraft in the airline’s logistical operations.

Looking Ahead

Although timelines regarding Emirates’ eventual transition to Al Maktoum International Airport may shift due to broader industry dynamics, the current expansions at Dubai South indicate the airline’s commitment to shaping its future. With substantial investments already in progress, Emirates is positioning itself for continued growth in the post-DXB era.
