Exchange Online Enables Writeback to Sync Cloud Mailbox with On-Prem Active Directory

Microsoft has launched a public preview of a new feature for Exchange Online that allows writeback to synchronize cloud mailboxes with on-premises Active Directory. This innovative capability aims to decrease organizations’ reliance on traditional on-premises Exchange servers.
Overview of Exchange Online Writeback Feature
The writeback feature introduced by Microsoft addresses long-standing synchronization challenges faced by hybrid environments. It enables automatic updates from Exchange Online directly back to on-premises Active Directory. This effectively streamlines mailbox management and reduces discrepancies between cloud and local data systems.
Enhanced Management of Cloud Mailboxes
Exchange Online’s cloud-managed remote mailboxes facilitate the management of Exchange settings for directory-synced users within the cloud environment. Administrators can modify essential attributes like email addresses and mailbox visibility directly in Exchange Online.
Benefits of Automatic Writeback
- Automatically synchronizes changes from Exchange Online to Active Directory.
- Reduces manual input, thereby minimizing potential errors and inconsistencies.
- Ensures legacy applications that depend on Active Directory continue to function smoothly.
This functionality eliminates the need for an on-premises Exchange server, allowing organizations to shift toward fully cloud-based management without disruption.
Technical Details and Usage
The synchronization process is powered by Microsoft Entra Cloud Sync, which allows for continuous updates of Exchange mailbox attributes. Microsoft has assured users that existing configurations will remain intact; organizations already utilizing Microsoft Entra Connect Sync will not need to make any changes.
Limitations and Future Plans
Currently, the writeback feature supports organizations with a maximum of 200,000 cloud-managed mailboxes during its public preview phase. This is particularly beneficial for commercial customers seeking to streamline operations. Microsoft plans to increase this limit by June 2026, as part of its broader rollout strategy.
The introduction of the Exchange Online writeback feature marks a significant milestone in easing the management of hybrid Exchange environments, paving the way for a more seamless transition to cloud-based solutions.
