Asteroid the Size of a Basketball Court to Skim Earth Tonight
An asteroid named “2026 JH2,” measuring approximately the size of a basketball court, will make a close approach to Earth tonight. It is expected to pass within 90,000 kilometers of our planet around 11:30 PM French time, as reported by various sources.
What is Asteroid 2026 JH2?
Discovered on May 10 by astronomers at the Mount Lemmon Survey in Arizona and the Farpoint Observatory in Kansas, 2026 JH2 has a width estimated between 16 and 35 meters. This celestial body is classified as a near-Earth object but poses no threat of collision.
Approach Details
- Date of Approach: Tonight, around 11:30 PM (French time)
- Distance from Earth: 90,000 kilometers
- Size: Similar to a basketball court (16-35 meters wide)
- Course: Will pass less than a quarter of the distance to the Moon
No Collision Risk
Astronomers assure that there is no risk of collision. The asteroid’s trajectory will keep it sufficiently distant from Earth to avoid impacting satellites or entering the atmosphere. If it were to enter the atmosphere, it would likely disintegrate without causing significant damage.
Observation Opportunities
Although 2026 JH2 is too small to be seen with the naked eye, it can be observed using amateur telescopes. For those without telescopes, live coverage will be available on the YouTube channel “The Virtual Telescope Project.”
This event presents an excellent opportunity for astronomy enthusiasts to engage with a near-Earth object while remaining assured of safety from any potential threats.
