PSG Joins Race for West Ham Talent Filling Paquetá’s Void
Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a key talent in European football, catching the attention of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The 23-year-old midfielder joined West Ham United after being acquired from Southampton for £38 million. His rise to prominence has coincided with the departure of Lucas Paquetá, who was sold to Flamengo.
West Ham Prepares for Life Without Fernandes
West Ham United has recognized that Mateus Fernandes is likely to leave this transfer window. Despite being with the club for less than a year, his performance has made him an invaluable asset. According to reports, the club aims to utilize the funds from his potential sale to finance future signings, regardless of their league status.
Fernandes’s Journey in European Football
Fernandes’ career started under challenging circumstances at Sporting CP, where he struggled for playtime. He departed in 2024 for just £15 million, overshadowed by other talents like Matheus Nunes and João Palhinha. His exit was lamented by then-coach Ruben Amorim, who believed he had great potential.
After moving to Southampton, Fernandes had a standout season despite the club finishing last in the Premier League in 2024/25. He was voted the team’s best player, contributing two assists and four goals over 36 matches. West Ham clearly saw his potential, paying more than double what Southampton had invested.
Filling Paquetá’s Void
Fernandes initially found himself on the bench, as Nuno Espírito Santo favored Paquetá in the attacking midfield role. However, he seized his opportunity when Paquetá’s transfer opened up space for him to shine. Since January, he has built a solid partnership with Tomas Soucek, recording five goals and four assists in approximately 40 matches.
- Goals: 5
- Assists: 4
- Matches: 40
His versatility allows him to play multiple roles—defensive midfielder, winger, or attacking midfielder—best utilized when given the freedom to advance while Soucek covers defensively. He has expressed gratitude for the freedom his coach has granted him during matches.
International Recognition
Fernandes’s consistency and performance have earned him a spot in the Portuguese national team. In March, he made his debut under coach Roberto Martínez. This achievement capped off an extensive journey through Portugal’s youth teams.
As the transfer window approaches, PSG’s interest in Fernandes suggests that he may soon find himself playing for a club with a larger profile. West Ham hopes to achieve a significant return on their investment of £38 million from less than a year ago.
