Belgium May Skip Eurovision 2027 Without Vote on Israel’s Participation

Belgium’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 is uncertain due to concerns regarding Israel’s involvement. The Flemish broadcaster VRT has indicated that unless the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) allows a vote on Israel’s participation, Belgium may step back from the next contest.
Concerns Over Israel’s Participation
VRT spokesperson Yasmine Van der Borght expressed that the likelihood of sending an artist in 2027 is minimal. She emphasized the need for the EBU to clarify its stance on peace and human rights. VRT is advocating for a direct vote among EBU members regarding Israel’s eligibility in the competition.
Call for Clear Framework
Van der Borght stated that the organization’s concerns extend beyond just Israel. VRT is pushing for an objective framework that defines the eligibility criteria for Eurovision participation. Currently, rules state that only broadcasters who are full EBU members can compete, with membership granted based on location or Council of Europe membership.
- VRT’s request: a transparent system for determining participation conditions.
- Previous Eurovision results: Belgium’s performance has varied over the years.
Belgium’s Eurovision History
Belgium was one of the original seven countries participating in the first Eurovision contest in 1956. The nation has won the title once, in 1986, with Sandra Kim’s “J’aime la vie.” This victory was controversial, as she was only 13 years old, violating age restrictions at that time.
Recent Performances
In the late 2000s, Belgium faced challenges, failing to reach the finals from 2005 to 2010. However, in 2010, Tom Dice achieved a notable sixth place with 143 points. Overall, Belgium has finished last in Eurovision on eight occasions, including two instances of scoring no points.
The future of Belgium’s participation in Eurovision hinges on the EBU’s response to the request for a vote on Israel’s involvement. If no significant changes occur, VRT’s absence from the 2027 contest is likely. As discussions continue, the Belgian broadcaster seeks solidarity and support from fellow European nations.
