Windstorm Triggers Special Weather Alert on B.C. Highways

A significant windstorm is affecting British Columbia’s southern Interior, leading Environment Canada to issue special weather alerts for two critical highways. Strong winds are expected to develop, creating potentially hazardous conditions for drivers.

Weather Impact on B.C. Highways

The weather office has identified a “vigorous trough” that will usher in wind gusts reaching up to 80 km/h. This weather alert encompasses two major routes:

  • Coquihalla Highway: between Hope, Merritt, and Kamloops
  • Okanagan Connector: between Merritt and Kelowna

Driving Conditions and Recommendations

Winds originating from the southwest are anticipated to begin Wednesday afternoon. These powerful gusts will particularly challenge tall vehicles and trucks. Fortunately, the wind speeds are expected to diminish to more moderate levels by midnight.

Environment Canada advises all motorists to check highway forecasts prior to travel in the affected regions. Sudden changes in mountain weather can lead to unpredictable and dangerous driving conditions.
