The designation of exceptional player status in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) is a significant achievement for young hockey players. It allows players as young as 15 to compete in major junior hockey, provided they demonstrate remarkable skill and maturity. Since its inception in 2005, only nine players have earned this honor, including notable names like Connor McDavid and John Tavares. The latest recipient is Landon DuPont, who received the status in April 2024.
Dupont Makes WHL History
Following his exceptional status, DuPont was drafted first overall by the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League (WHL) Draft. He became the second player in WHL history to achieve this status, following Connor Bedard, and is recognized as the first defenseman to do so. “I feel super thankful that Hockey Canada allowed that to happen,” DuPont stated.
A Unique Journey
DuPont’s path differs from many of his peers, as he relocated from Calgary to Everett, Washington, at just 15 years old. Such a transition is rare among exceptional players and mirrors Connor McDavid’s move from Toronto to Pennsylvania. DuPont admitted the experience was daunting but was grateful for the support he received from the Silvertips organization.

Living conditions were made easier thanks to his placement with two teammates in a supportive billet house. He expressed appreciation for the team’s efforts to help him adjust to life in a new country. “Having someone to talk to in your first year is nice,” DuPont remarked.
Balancing Life and Hockey
DuPont’s schooling also transformed as he shifted from in-person classes in Calgary to online learning. Despite the challenges, he remains on track to graduate with his childhood friends. “It was hard to transition to online learning, but it has its perks,” he said. He finds it beneficial to focus on hockey during the day and complete his studies at his own pace.
On-Ice Performance
Landon DuPont has excelled on the ice, marking his territory as a skilled defenseman. In his first WHL season, he led all rookies with 17 goals and 60 points in 64 games. His contributions were crucial in helping the Silvertips secure the top spot in the WHL standings with a record of 48-12-8. Although they reached the playoffs, they were eliminated in the second round.
This season, DuPont improved his performance further, scoring 18 goals and amassing 73 points in 63 games. As of now, he is tied for fourth in playoff scoring with four goals and 22 points. Notably, Everett achieved a franchise-best record of 52-10-6 this season, and they are one step away from clinching their first WHL Championship.

International Experience and Future Aspirations

In the latter tournament, he served as an alternate captain, showcasing leadership skills at a young age. Although Canada fell short in the semifinals, they secured bronze against Finland.
Looking ahead, DuPont aspires to play in the World Juniors, inspired by watching his billet brother compete. He is motivated by the chance to represent Canada at a prestigious event, especially with the 2027 tournament being co-hosted in his home province. “It would mean the world to represent your country on the biggest stage,” he commented.
With his trajectory in the WHL and international competition, Landon DuPont is a player to watch in the coming years. His dedication to the sport and resilience in adapting to changes make him a promising athlete in Canadian hockey.
