Parks Canada Enforces Dog Ban, Issues Wolf Warning at Long Beach, Tofino

Parks Canada has announced a temporary dog ban along the Long Beach Unit of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, located near Tofino. This decision comes in response to increased interactions between wolves and humans, highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures.
Background of the Dog Ban
The wolf warning in the area has been active since September 2025. On February 11, a dog prohibition was implemented for specific sections of Long Beach. Just two days later, this restriction expanded following an alarming report of a wolf attacking a dog on Willowbrae Trail.
Current Status of the Dog Ban
- The dog ban remains in effect indefinitely.
- A wolf warning is also active.
- Area closures include Goldmine Trail and Wickaninnish Dunes.
- Dog prohibition extends from the south boundary to Green Point Rocks.
In areas where dogs are permitted, Parks Canada emphasizes that pets must be leashed at all times. Authorities warn that off-leash dogs can increase the likelihood of dangerous encounters with wolves, which might perceive them as both competitors and prey.
Statements from Local Authorities
On Friday, Dennis Hetu, a member of the Toquaht Nation, and Francis Bruhwiler, representing the national park reserve, addressed the public’s role in wolf interactions. They stressed the importance of maintaining distance from wolves to promote coexistence.
“Every time there is an interaction, it disrupts the wolves’ natural balance, potentially endangering their lives,” said Hetu. Bruhwiler agreed, noting, “Any interaction with wolves is detrimental. Ideally, wolves should be spotted only through tracks on the beach, away from crowds.”
Historical Context
Wolves have been part of this ecosystem for thousands of years and have coexisted with local First Nations. However, Parks Canada has noted a significant increase in the wolf population within the Long Beach Unit recently.
Guidelines for Visitors
All visitors to Pacific Rim National Park Reserve are encouraged to stay informed about the regulations regarding dogs and pets. Detailed information can be found on the El-Balad website.
