Safety Improvements Announced for High-Risk Derby Road Near Schools

In a significant development for road safety in Derby, improvements are coming to Uttoxeter Old Road, a notorious thoroughfare frequented by children. Following persistent concerns from residents and local councillors, Derby City Council has secured £146,000 in funding to install a new pedestrian crossing near the junction with Parcel Terrace. This initiative aims to enhance safety for students traveling to nearby schools.
Safety Improvements on Uttoxeter Old Road
Uttoxeter Old Road has long been labeled a dangerous route, particularly for young pedestrians. Both Bemrose School and Derby Cathedral School are located nearby, leading to increased foot traffic. Many children navigate this busy road, often facing perilous conditions.
- Funding amount: £146,000
- Location of new crossing: Uttoxeter Old Road/Parcel Terrace junction
- Expected completion: End of 2024
Community Response
Local residents have voiced their approval of the planned improvements. Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, representing Mackworth and New Zealand, highlighted the urgent need for better pedestrian facilities, stating he has witnessed children “running for their dear lives” amid heavy traffic. This sentiment echoed among parents, with one mother expressing her deep worries while pushing her baby’s pram along the road.
Concerns over safety, especially during rush hour, have been common. Residents share that children often wait long periods to find a safe moment to cross.
Future Plans and Additional Funding
In addition to the Uttoxeter Old Road crossing, similar funding has been allocated for a crossing at the Duffield Road and West Bank Avenue junction. Councillor Onuoha reaffirmed his commitment to improving road safety, stating, “This is a big step forward for road safety in our community.”
The installation of these new pedestrian crossings is expected to not only enhance child safety but also improve the overall traffic flow in the area, albeit with some possible delays for drivers.
As these projects progress, residents will receive updates, ensuring the community remains informed about developments aimed at enhancing road safety for all.
