Attempted Child Abduction at Chilliwack School Leads to Charges

Charges have been filed against a man following an attempted child abduction at a school in Chilliwack. On May 13, at 9:09 a.m., Chilliwack RCMP received a report of an attempted abduction involving a 7-year-old girl at Chilliwack Central Elementary School.

The incident occurred when the suspect allegedly attempted to lead the child away from the school grounds. Fortunately, a vigilant citizen intervened, ensuring the girl’s safe return to school. The child was unharmed during the encounter.

Shortly after the attempt, police apprehended a man fitting the assailant’s description nearby. Joel McGillis has been charged with kidnapping a person under 16 years of age. He is currently in custody, with a court appearance scheduled for May 15.

Investigators confirmed that McGillis did not have any prior connection to the child. Authorities believe that this incident was isolated. They are now seeking witnesses who may have been in the area between Central Elementary School and Margaret Avenue from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.
