Fossils in Thailand Unveil Giant New Dinosaur Species

Recent discoveries in Thailand have unveiled a new giant dinosaur species named Nagatitan. This notable finding contributes to Thailand’s growing reputation as a site rich in dinosaur fossils.
Nagatitan: The 14th Dinosaur Species in Thailand
According to Sethapanichsakul, a paleontology enthusiast, the naming of the Nagatitan fulfills his childhood dream. This dinosaur marks the 14th species named in Thailand, indicating the country’s increasing importance in paleontological research.
Diversity of Dinosaur Fossils in Thailand
Dr. Sita Manitkoon, a palaeontologist from Mahasarakham University, emphasized that Thailand boasts a significant diversity in dinosaur fossils. He noted that the country might be the third richest in Asia regarding dinosaur remains.
- Dinosaur Species: Nagatitan
- Location: Thailand
- Significance: 14th dinosaur species named in the country
- Expert Perspectives: Dr. Sita Manitkoon, Prof. Paul Upchurch
Environmental Conditions During Nagatitan’s Era
The Nagatitan lived during a period of increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide, aligning with rising global temperatures. Prof. Paul Upchurch from UCL remarked on the implications of these high temperatures for sauropods, the family to which Nagatitan belongs.
Impact of Climate on Sauropods
According to Upchurch, it seems peculiar that large-bodied dinosaurs like sauropods thrived under such conditions. He suggested that elevated temperatures likely affected the availability of plant life, crucial for these massive herbivores.
This study reveals not only the existence of a new giant dinosaur species but also sheds light on the environmental challenges faced by prehistoric life. As more research unfolds, Thailand’s role as a significant site for dinosaur discovery continues to grow.
