Jardim Asserts Flamengo Didn’t Underestimate Vitória: ‘Unexpected Result’

Flamengo experienced a surprising exit from the Copa do Brasil after losing to Vitória. Following a narrow 2-1 victory in the first leg of the fifth round, Flamengo fell 0-2 in the return match at Barradão. This unexpected result saw the Bahia club advance in the competition.

Jardim Comments on the Match

Leonardo Jardim, Flamengo’s head coach, downplayed the notion of humiliation in his post-match statements. He emphasized that his team did not underestimate their opponent, acknowledging the challenges posed by playing at Vitória’s home ground.

“We entered the game well, possessing 70% of the ball and taking 26 shots,” Jardim explained. However, an early goal from Vitória, scored just seven minutes into the match, shifted the dynamics. He noted that the goal was nearly indefensible, causing a ripple effect on the team’s performance.

Errors and Missed Opportunities

  • Flamengo struggled with defensive errors, allowing a crucial cross during a corner kick.
  • Despite increased offensive pressure, the team was unable to convert scoring opportunities.

Jardim stated, “We tried until the end, pushing forward and filling the area with attackers. Yet, we were inefficient in our finishing.” His comments highlighted the team’s comprehensive efforts that ultimately fell short.

Season Ambitions and Reflections

The defeat coincided with a statement from club president Luiz Eduardo Baptista, who spoke about the ambition of securing an unprecedented treble. Jardim acknowledged the high expectations but also recognized the difficulties involved in achieving such a goal.

“While I did not hear the President’s comments, Flamengo has the ambition to win, which is inherently challenging. No team has succeeded, making it difficult. However, this does not mean we did not want to progress in all three competitions,” Jardim reflected. He admitted that the team lacked the competence required to advance in this elimination round.
