Alberta Wildfire Prompts Evacuation Alert Near Sundre

Residents near Sundre, Alberta, are facing an evacuation alert due to a wildfire burning approximately 30 kilometers northwest of the town. An emergency directive has been issued for all campers, backcountry users, and travelers in the vicinity of highways 734 and 584 to evacuate immediately. Local residents are also advised to prepare for a potential evacuation.

Evacuation Alert Details

Although there is currently no immediate threat to nearby communities, officials have issued this evacuation alert as a precaution. Melissa Story, an information officer with Alberta Wildfire, emphasized the importance of safety given the fire’s unpredictability.

Fire Size and Conditions

  • As of Thursday at 5:30 p.m., the wildfire covered approximately 130 hectares (1.3 square kilometers or 320 acres).
  • Wind gusts reaching up to 65 km/h have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

Response to the Fire

Firefighting efforts are underway, utilizing ground crews and helicopters, conditions permitting. Smoke from the fire has been reported in areas such as Carstairs, located about 80 kilometers away, and residents of Olds, approximately 70 kilometers to the east, have also noted smoke and odors affecting their air quality.
