PM Shehbaz, President Aliyev Discuss Mideast Peace Initiatives: PMO

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan on recent developments regarding peace initiatives in the Middle East. This phone call, initiated on Tuesday, emphasized the importance of bilateral relations between Pakistan and Azerbaijan.
Discussion on Peace Initiatives
During their conversation, Prime Minister Shahbaz conveyed his best wishes to President Aliyev for the forthcoming World Urban Forum. The event is scheduled to take place in Baku next week. He expressed confidence that the forum would effectively promote global urban development goals under Azerbaijan’s leadership. Although the prime minister could not attend in person, he assured that Pakistan would have a substantial representation.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Both leaders appreciated the positive trajectory of their countries’ relations. They emphasized a shared commitment to enhance collaboration in various sectors, including:
- Trade and investment
- Energy
- People-to-people contacts
Additionally, President Aliyev praised Pakistan’s successful initiatives to secure a ceasefire between the United States and Iran. This acknowledgment reflects the international community’s trust in Pakistan’s leadership and mediation skills.
Future Meetings and Engagements
The two leaders agreed to maintain close communication and expressed their anticipation for an in-person meeting later this year. Prime Minister Sharif also reiterated his invitation for President Aliyev to visit Pakistan at his earliest convenience.
Mediation Efforts in the Middle East
Pakistan continues its involvement in mediating discussions between the United States and Iran amid ongoing tensions. After a ceasefire brokered by Pakistan on April 8, direct talks took place in Islamabad on April 11 and 12. Although no agreement was reached, the negotiations displayed the potential for dialogue without regression into conflict.
This proactive approach showcases Pakistan’s dedication to fostering peace in the region. Historically, Prime Minister Sharif has met with President Aliyev on several occasions, including a bilateral meeting in November last year and a visit in May 2025. Both leaders have consistently worked towards broadening their strategic partnership.
