Mario Lemieux has been recognized as the greatest player in major junior hockey history by the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). This prestigious accolade was announced as part of the league’s 50th anniversary celebrations, revealed in their all-time Top 50 list.

Lemieux emerged at the top of the list, surpassing notable players such as Sidney Crosby, Wayne Gretzky, Connor McDavid, and Mike Bossy. The CHL’s rankings were formulated through media and fan votes, highlighting the impact these players have had on the sport.

- Set single-season records: 133 goals and 282 points in 1983-84
- Had a remarkable 61-game point streak
- Contributed to Laval’s 1984 QMJHL championship win

In response to his ranking, Lemieux expressed his honor at being recognized among other hockey legends. He attributed his success to his time in the QMJHL and emphasized the importance of the CHL in the development of Canadian hockey talent.
Legacy and Achievements
CHL president Dan MacKenzie praised Lemieux’s exceptional play, stating that his achievements with the Laval Voisins are a significant part of CHL history. Lemieux later achieved great success in the NHL, winning two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins and accumulating 1,723 points over his career in 915 regular-season games.
Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997, Lemieux had his waiting period waived due to the impact he made on the game. He returned to the NHL in 2000, playing for five additional seasons and leading Canada to Olympic gold in 2002.
