Europe’s Weekly Snow Update: Issue #314

Europe’s ski scene is experiencing notable changes as the warmer season approaches. This week’s snow update highlights snowfall across various regions, while some resorts are winding down for the year.
Snow Conditions in the Alps
Alpine glaciers received fresh snow this week, with totals ranging from 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches). The recent cold snap resulted in higher elevation resorts such as Livigno and Obertauern reporting snow down to about 1,800 meters. Temperatures have plummeted to as low as -15°C.
Resorts and Their Operations
- Hintertux Glacier: Currently boasts the deepest snowpack in Europe at 305 cm (122 inches) with approximately 42 km (26 miles) of open terrain.
- Kitzsteinhorn: Features a snow depth of 170 cm (68 inches) with 20 km of slopes accessible.
- Molltal Glacier: Offers around 15 km (9 miles) of terrain with a snow depth of 180 cm (72 inches).
- Les 2 Alpes: Continues operations with around 20 km (13 miles) of slopes, benefiting from additional snowfall.
Despite several glacier resorts closing, the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise in Italy remains an option, currently holding a snow cover of 120 cm (48 inches).
Scandinavia’s Snow Update
Most Scandinavian ski resorts have closed, but Sweden’s Riksgränsen is operational, offering unique midnight sun skiing experiences. Norway has reopened the Galdhøpiggen glacier for summer skiing, reporting snowpacks between 280 and 400 cm (112 to 160 inches).
Current Conditions in Scandinavia
- Riksgränsen: Snow conditions are below average, with only half the terrain open. Daily snowfall totals of 2 to 5 cm (1 to 2 inches) have refreshed slopes.
- Galdhøpiggen: Will remain wintry with highs around -4°C and lows near -8°C.
Upcoming Weather Forecast
A cooler and unsettled weather pattern is predicted across Europe. Clouds and scattered snow showers will be common above elevations of 2,800 to 3,000 meters. Nighttime temperatures on the summits are expected to drop between -4°C and -8°C.
As winter transitions to spring, ski enthusiasts are urged to take advantage of the remaining glacier skiing opportunities before the season ends at many locations. Future reports will continue to monitor ski conditions across Europe.
