WNBA, NBA Approve Sun’s Relocation to Houston

The WNBA and NBA board of governors have officially approved the relocation of the Connecticut Sun to Houston. The announcement was made on Wednesday, confirming the sale to Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta.

Details of the Sale

The agreement to sell the team was reached in March for $300 million. This information comes from a source familiar with the situation, who requested anonymity due to its sensitive nature. The approval from the board was necessary to finalize the relocation.

Current Season and Future Plans

For the remainder of the current season, the Sun will continue to play in Connecticut. Most games will take place at Mohegan Sun Arena, the team’s home since 2003. Additionally, the franchise is scheduled to play:

  • Two games in Hartford
  • One game in Boston

After this season, the team will officially move to Houston ahead of the next season.

Impact on Players and Staff

Sun president Jen Rizzotti expressed her commitment to allowing staff and players to concentrate on the season’s final games in Connecticut. She emphasized the importance of creating lasting memories for fans during the team’s last season in the state.

Rizzotti also mentioned that there had been initial collaborations between the Sun’s personnel and the Houston Rockets’ group. Moving forward, more interactions are expected as the relocation progresses.

Future Opportunities in Houston

Looking ahead, Rizzotti believes the resources and infrastructure associated with Houston will benefit both players and staff. She noted that individuals currently working with the team may have the opportunity to relocate to Houston if they wish.

This transition marks a significant change in the WNBA landscape, as the Sun prepare to embrace a new chapter in Houston.
