Vancouver Leaders Urge Action to Keep Whitecaps from Relocating

The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade has taken the initiative to mobilize businesses in an effort to prevent the Vancouver Whitecaps from relocating. An open letter has been issued, gathering support from hundreds of local businesses committed to exploring new sponsorships, partnerships, and ticket programs to bolster the Major League Soccer (MLS) team’s revenue.
Vancouver Whitecaps Sale and Relocation Plans
Since December 2024, the Vancouver Whitecaps have been for sale. Recently, an investor group led by businessman Grant Gustavson submitted a bid to MLS with intentions to move the club to Las Vegas. Gustavson, who is linked to Public Storage co-founder B. Wayne Hughes, is planning a privately financed stadium in Nevada as part of this relocation.
Community Support for the Whitecaps
Bridgitte Anderson, CEO of the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, emphasized the significance of the Whitecaps, stating, “For more than 50 years, the Vancouver Whitecaps have been a pillar of our community.” The organization is rallying local firms to articulate their desire for the team to remain in Vancouver.
- More than 50 years of community presence
- Hundreds of local businesses pledging support
- Potential impact on local economy through sponsorships
Meeting to Discuss Future
This week, Premier David Eby is set to meet with representatives from the Whitecaps, MLS, the City of Vancouver, and local First Nations. This meeting aims to discuss potential solutions for keeping the team in the city. Eby expressed doubts about any impending decisions regarding the relocation, saying, “If the fix is in and it’s going to Vegas, then just be clear with us.”
Local Ownership Group’s Interest
Recently, B.C. Jobs Minister Ravi Kahlon revealed that a local ownership group has approached the province with serious intentions to bid for the club, aiming to preserve the franchise in Vancouver. Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster noted that over 30 potential buyers have examined the team’s financials since its sale announcement, but none have shown a willingness to manage the franchise in its current economic environment.
Economic Impact of the Whitecaps
The Vancouver Whitecaps play a vital role in the local economy. The Board of Trade highlighted that the team attracts hundreds of thousands of fans downtown annually. This influx generates substantial economic activity, benefitting local businesses particularly in hospitality, retail, and tourism sectors.
As the uncertainty around the Whitecaps continues, it arrives just weeks before Vancouver is scheduled to host seven FIFA World Cup matches at B.C. Place. The outcome of the current discussions could have far-reaching implications for the city’s sports landscape.
