Hantavirus: Eight Contacts Identified in Quebec, No Cases Confirmed

Quebec health authorities have identified eight contacts related to a hantavirus outbreak. However, they have confirmed that no cases have been reported in the province as of Wednesday evening. The announcement was made by the Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services.

Hantavirus Situation in Quebec

According to public health evaluations, these eight individuals are regarded as having a low risk of developing the infection. The Ministry of Health emphasized that the outbreak linked to a cruise ship has not resulted in any confirmed cases in Quebec. Furthermore, none of the individuals associated with these contacts are residents of the province.

Health Precautions and Monitoring

  • Contacts must self-monitor for symptoms for 42 days following their last known exposure.
  • They are not required to isolate if they remain asymptomatic.

These individuals’ exposure stems from an outbreak that occurred outside Canada. They did not have any prolonged or direct contact with the confirmed case.

Update on Potential Exposure Across Canada

Earlier in the day, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) announced that one individual from Quebec, previously considered at high risk for exposure, is no longer under that classification. This follows the arrival of four Canadian passengers from the cruise ship MV Hondius in British Columbia. They have been transferred to designated facilities for isolation lasting from 21 to 42 days, but all remain asymptomatic.

Other Exposed Individuals

In total, five additional people in Canada are classified as having potentially been exposed to confirmed cases of the Andes hantavirus. These include:

  • Two individuals who were on the MV Hondius but disembarked before the outbreak was identified.
  • Three individuals exposed during a flight associated with a confirmed case.

The PHAC confirmed that all individuals across Canada who were potentially exposed are asymptomatic and continue to receive support and monitoring from local health authorities.

Overall Risk Assessment

The Canadian government is closely monitoring the situation. Officials believe that the overall risk to the general population concerning the hantavirus outbreak remains low. Currently, there are nine contacts at high risk in Canada, which continues to be a point of focus for health officials.
