Lotus Emira Adopts New Hybrid V6, Replacing Toyota and AMG Engines
The Lotus Emira, launched in 2021, is quickly becoming the brand’s best-selling sports car. This success stems from its advanced design based on a modified version of the Evora platform. To meet evolving EU regulations, the Emira’s original Toyota-sourced V6 engine will now be replaced with Horse’s new hybrid V6 engine.
Introduction of the New Hybrid V6 Engine
The new 3.0-litre V6 engine, unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show, represents a significant innovation in hybrid technology. Horse CEO Matias Giannini describes it as both “powerful and lightweight.” He emphasizes that its compact design makes it the “lightest and smallest hybrid V6 in the world.”
Key Features of the Engine
- Compact Design: The engine’s smaller architecture allows for a lightweight configuration.
- Powerful Performance: Engine performance standards in the hybrid category are set to rise.
- Application: Suitable for both mild and full-hybrid vehicles.
This development is part of Horse’s strategy as a new joint venture between Renault and Geely, established in 2024. The company focuses on creating electrified internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrains for various automotive manufacturers.
Adaptability and Modular Design
Giannini acknowledged that the hybrid V6 was not part of the initial product strategy but was developed effectively using existing resources. The modular design philosophy enables the scaling up or down of engines as needed. Consequently, this has paved the way for an upcoming V8 engine, derived from the V6, set to power Lotus’s next supercar.
Conclusion
The Lotus Emira’s transition to the new hybrid V6 engine marks a pivotal moment in the brand’s evolution. The innovative engine design not only meets upcoming regulatory requirements but also reinforces Lotus’s commitment to performance and efficiency.
