Austrian Jets Intercept US Military Planes Twice in Two Days

Austrian Eurofighter Typhoon jets intercepted U.S. military aircraft on two consecutive days, May 10 and 11. The interceptions were related to modified PC-12 turboprop aircraft used primarily for signals intelligence and scouting, known in the U.S. as U-28.

Austrian Military Response

On May 10, the U.S. Air Force requested an overflight permit for two PC-12 aircraft but did not use it. Despite this, two different U.S. aircraft approached Austrian airspace without prior notice. Consequently, the Austrian military dispatched jets to intercept them. However, these U.S. planes turned back before entering Austrian airspace, as confirmed by military spokesperson Michael Bauer.

The following day, the U.S. refilled the overflight permit and successfully transited Austrian airspace. Austrian jets were deployed again to verify that the aircraft matched the approved flight plan.

Interception Details

  • Dates: May 10 and 11
  • Location of Interception: Over the Totes Gebirge mountain range in Upper Austria, approximately 60 kilometers from the German border.
  • Type of Aircraft: U.S. modified PC-12 turboprop, designated U-28.
  • Austrian Military Classification: “Priority A intercept” indicating high urgency.

Bauer stated, “Some things you have to see for yourself,” indicating the need for for thorough verification of these overflights. As of the recent reports, there was still uncertainty about whether the aircraft observed were those authorized by the overflight permit.

Austria’s Neutrality Clauses

Austria maintains a long-standing policy of military neutrality, which is embedded in its constitution. Any foreign military transit, whether by land or air, necessitates prior approval and is usually only permitted if unrelated to active conflicts.

The country recently closed its airspace to U.S. operations related to the war in Iran. Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler expressed that Austrians wish to remain detached from what he termed “Trump’s politics of chaos.”

Historical Context

Austrian military provided context about the importance of its strategic location, lying between major NATO members. Historical precedents exist, including an incident in October 2002 when Austria detected U.S. stealth aircraft illegally using its airspace, leading to diplomatic complaints. Recent intercepts will equally be reviewed through diplomatic means.

In conclusion, these interceptions underscore the complexities of international military cooperation and airspace management, particularly within regions observing strict neutrality protocols.
