Ontario’s health authorities are closely monitoring contacts related to a recent hantavirus outbreak. The province has identified seven additional individuals as low-risk contacts. This comes after three high-risk contacts were already isolated due to exposure while traveling.
Current Situation in Ontario
In total, ten people in Ontario are currently under precautionary monitoring. They have been advised to isolate for 45 days. This measure addresses concerns arising from a global outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship.
High-Risk Contacts Identified
The three high-risk individuals in Ontario include a couple from Grey Bruce and another person who traveled to the Greater Toronto Area. They shared a flight with a cruise passenger who sadly passed away after contracting hantavirus. All high-risk contacts are presently asymptomatic and in good health.
Other Provinces Monitoring Contacts
Aside from those in Ontario, six additional individuals are self-isolating in Alberta and British Columbia. These individuals also remain symptom-free. Health officials emphasize the importance of monitoring potential contacts from the cruise ship.
Global Hantavirus Risk Assessment
The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that the overall risk of hantavirus on a global scale remains low. As of now, eleven positive cases have been reported, resulting in three fatalities linked to the outbreak. However, no new deaths have occurred since early May.
Testing Considerations
Health experts are uncertain about the effectiveness of testing individuals without symptoms. Symptoms may take weeks to develop, which complicates early diagnosis. Testing methods include:
- Antibody Testing: Detects the immune response to the virus.
- PCR Testing: Identifies viral genetic material.
Dr. Bonnie Henry, British Columbia’s health officer, suggests that testing may not be useful before symptoms appear. However, if individuals begin to show signs of illness, healthcare officials are prepared to conduct tests and provide necessary treatment.
Isolation Protocols and Health Measures
Four Canadians returned from the cruise and are voluntarily isolating for three to six weeks. Isolation measures remain a last resort, as health officers prefer cooperation over mandates. The authorities have the legal capability to enforce isolation if necessary, but this option is not currently in use.
