Early Storm Brings Gusts Up to 70 km/h; Orange Alert Remains

The early hours of Monday marked the arrival of a significant Western Disturbance, impacting the Chandigarh tricity region. Thunderstorms and strong winds, reaching gusts of up to 70 km/h, were reported around 2 AM, causing power and water supply disruptions across large areas. Although this storm lasted less than an hour, the aftermath lingered until repair services restored utilities later in the morning.

Orange Alert Issued for Chandigarh Tricity

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for the Chandigarh tricity, anticipating further weather disturbances on Monday and Tuesday. The alert indicates residents should “Be Prepared” for thunderstorm activity and gusty winds of 50 to 60 km/h, with isolated areas potentially experiencing gusts of up to 70 km/h.

Weather Forecast and Expected Conditions

  • Thunderstorms are forecasted with light to moderate rain during Monday and Tuesday.
  • From May 13 to May 15, a yellow alert will remain in effect, forecasting winds of 40 to 50 km/h.
  • The region is expected to see a dry period from May 16 to May 17 with no weather warnings.

As the Western Disturbance moves closer, the IMD anticipates intensified convective activity, including thunderstorms and lightning. This weather pattern is expected to taper off by the weekend.

Potential Impacts of High Winds

The IMD has warned of multiple hazards locally due to the high winds and thunderstorms. Possible impacts include:

  • Small tree branches snapping and flying debris, posing a risk in exposed locations.
  • Lightning strikes at vulnerable sites such as large trees and electric poles.
  • Disruptions in municipal services, including electricity and water supply.
  • Slippery roads leading to traffic congestion and driving hazards.

Residents are advised to stay indoors during storms, particularly away from windows and unstable structures. It’s recommended to keep livestock safe and avoid water bodies during this period.

Temperature and Rainfall Forecast

Following the storm, temperatures in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula are expected to rise significantly. The forecast indicates:

  • Maximum temperatures peaking at 39°C later in the week.
  • By Saturday, temperatures may reach 40°C, marking the onset of summer heat.
  • Scattered rainfall is predicted on Monday and Tuesday, with isolated occurrences possibly continuing into the workweek.

The cumulative rainfall since March has exceeded seasonal averages, highlighting an active pre-monsoon period. The region remains on alert as meteorologists keep a close watch on the evolving weather patterns.
