St. John’s Ready to Welcome Cruise Ships

St. John’s is preparing to welcome more cruise ships into the region as the industry continues to grow. However, the city is also taking proactive measures regarding health emergencies that may arise from such visits.

Preparedness for Health Outbreaks

On September 30, 2025, the cruise ship Arcadia is scheduled to visit St. John’s. In light of recent events involving the MV Hondius, the municipal council is ensuring local readiness. The Hondius recently docked in Tenerife, where three fatalities were reported due to a serious strain of hantavirus.

Jill Bruce, the council’s lead on the cruise industry, addressed concerns regarding potential outbreaks. “We have contingency plans in place for any situation that may arise,” she stated. The Port of St. John’s, along with the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services (NLHS), is working closely to prepare for any necessary actions.

Emergency Protocols

St. John’s operates under a comprehensive emergency preparedness strategy. In the event of a health crisis, the city will collaborate with NL Health Services and the Port Authority. These organizations have established protocols to manage health-related incidents effectively.

  • Coordination with local health authorities.
  • Emergency preparedness teams ready to respond.
  • Plans for potential health outbreaks during cruise visits.

Bruce emphasized the importance of being ready for various scenarios. “Whether it’s an outbreak similar to hantavirus or smaller incidents, we can adapt and respond promptly,” she explained.

As St. John’s continues to welcome cruise ships, health and safety remain a top priority. With a growing industry, the city aims to safeguard its visitors while optimizing their experience.
