Nepal Battles for Survival as League 2 Tri-Series Kicks Off

The ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series has commenced at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, Nepal. The series features Nepal, the United States, and Scotland, with each team striving for crucial points. This series is particularly vital for Nepal as it could greatly influence their One Day International (ODI) future.

Nepal’s Campaign in the Tri-Series

Nepal is set to play two ODIs against both the US and Scotland. In total, the visitors will also face off against each other twice during the series. Currently, the US leads the League 2 standings with 36 points from 24 matches. Scotland follows closely with 34 points from 28 games, while Nepal languishes at seventh place, having accumulated only 18 points from 24 matches.

Importance of the Series

  • The top four teams in League 2 automatically qualify for the World Cup Qualifiers.
  • Teams falling behind risk losing their ODI status.

This tri-series marks Nepal’s third and final home series of the current League 2 cycle. Earlier, they hosted the Netherlands and Namibia and recently faced the UAE and Oman. In the previous home matches, Nepal secured four victories out of eight.

Scotland’s Quest for Victory

For Scotland, this series is an opportunity to overtake the US in the standings. They seek wins against both Nepal and the US. In their last visit to Kathmandu, Scotland faced a tough challenge; although they captured the League 2 title, they lost both previous fixtures against Nepal.

Scotland’s recent performances in Nepal have raised concerns. They lost two warm-up matches against Nepal A recently. As a response to these difficulties, Cricket Scotland appointed Azhar Ali, a former Pakistan captain, as a consultant for this series. Ali brings extensive experience playing in Asian conditions, which could significantly aid Scotland’s players.

Key Players and Recent Performances

Nepal has witnessed fluctuating form in their batting lineup. Vice-captain Dipendra Singh Airee stands out, scoring 268 runs with an impressive average close to 90 in recent games. However, the rest of the batting order requires more consistency.

  • Kushal Bhurtel and Aasif Sheikh have struggled, with both facing selection challenges.
  • Binod Bhandari has made a notable comeback, scoring a half-century before a disappointing duck in his next game.
  • Youngster Arjun Kumal has shown promise with solid performances.

Nepal has further revised their squad, bringing in Ishan Pandey to address the need for left-handed batters. Captain Rohit Paudel’s form is vital, as he has not made a notable score since his century against the UAE.

Bowling Challenges

Nepal’s bowling attack has struggled to maintain pressure, particularly given their traditional advantage in home conditions. The spinners, once a formidable force at Kathmandu, have not been as sharp, raising concerns for Nepal as they aim to revive their campaign in the League 2 tri-series.
