Blue Jays Designate Eric Lauer, Place Addison Barger on Injured List

In a significant shake-up, the Toronto Blue Jays have designated pitcher Eric Lauer for assignment. This decision reflects the team’s growing frustrations with Lauer’s performance in the current season. Additionally, the team has placed outfielder Addison Barger on the 10-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation.
Eric Lauer’s Performance Struggles
Eric Lauer, 30, has had a challenging second season with the Blue Jays. He has accumulated a troubling 6.69 ERA over 36.1 innings pitched. His discontent with his role in the bullpen has been evident, particularly regarding his usage by manager John Schneider. Lauer expressed strong feelings about his situation, stating he “hates” coming out of the bullpen.
Recent Game Performance
In his last appearance, Lauer entered the game as a bulk pitcher after two openers. Unfortunately, he gave up six runs in five innings, leading to a 6-1 defeat against the Los Angeles Angels.
Addison Barger on Injured List
Addison Barger has also faced challenges, being scratched from the lineup due to right elbow soreness. This comes just a day after he returned to action following a month-long absence due to a left ankle sprain.
Replacements and Prospects
In light of Barger’s injury, the Blue Jays have recalled outfielder Yohendrick Pinango and pitcher Yariel Rodriguez. Pinango is currently the 10th-ranked prospect within the Blue Jays’ organization, based on MLB assessments.
- Yohendrick Pinango:
- Current season with the Blue Jays: .423 batting average over 10 games.
- Performance in Triple-A Buffalo: .288 batting average, 3 home runs, 13 RBIs in 22 games.
- Yariel Rodriguez:
- ERA in Triple-A: 2.63 over 13.2 innings with 25 strikeouts.
- 2025 season performance: 3.08 ERA over 73 regular-season innings with the Blue Jays.
Pinango is expected to bat second in the upcoming series against the Tampa Bay Rays, set to kick off Monday at 7:07 p.m. ET / 4:07 p.m. PT, broadcasted on Sportsnet ONE and Sportsnet+. Meanwhile, Rodriguez will also be activated for this series opener.
