Blue Jays Designate Lauer, Place Barger on Injured List

The Toronto Blue Jays have made significant roster changes, designating left-hander Eric Lauer for assignment. His spot on the roster has been filled by right-hander Yariel Rodríguez.

Injuries and Roster Movements

In addition to Lauer’s designation, infielder/outfielder Addison Barger has been placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to May 10th due to right elbow inflammation. In response, outfielder Yohendrick Pinango has been recalled to fill Barger’s position.

Eric Lauer’s Season Overview

This season has been tumultuous for Lauer and the Blue Jays. He signed a minor league contract prior to the 2025 season. The left-hander was called up to the major league roster in late April, stepping in during a time of injuries within the team.

Over the 2025 season, Lauer played a critical role, making 15 starts and 13 appearances out of the bullpen. He pitched a total of 104 2/3 innings, achieving a commendable 3.18 earned run average (ERA) and a 23.9% strikeout rate. In the postseason, he maintained a 3.12 ERA across 8 2/3 innings as the Blue Jays reached Game Seven of the World Series.

A Shift in Dynamics

Despite a strong performance in 2025, Lauer’s relationship with the Blue Jays has since deteriorated. Following arbitration, the two sides could not settle on a salary. Lauer’s previous salary was $5.075 million, but the organization submitted a lower figure of $4.4 million. Ultimately, the Blue Jays won the arbitration case.

Lauer expressed frustration over his salary and his reduction to a bullpen role following the acquisition of Shane Bieber and the promotion of Trey Yesavage. Entering 2026, competition for starting roles was intense with the signing of new players like Dylan Cease and Max Scherzer. Initially, it seemed Lauer would again be relegated to the bullpen, especially as several pitchers, including José Berríos and Yesavage, were injured.

Current Performance Issues

Despite the injuries to others, Lauer secured a spot in the rotation. However, his performance has declined significantly this season, leading to his designation. As of now, he has made eight appearances, with only six classified as starts. His ERA has ballooned to 6.69, with a notable decrease in his strikeout rate to 16% and an increased walk rate of 9.9%. His fastball velocity has also dropped from last year’s 91.7 mph to an average of 90.4 mph this season, impacting his effectiveness on the mound.

The Blue Jays are looking to adjust their roster as they aim to improve their performance moving forward.
