Security Strengthens Patrols Ahead of Swearing-In Ceremony

In preparation for the swearing-in ceremony of President Yoweri Museveni, security forces have increased their presence across the Kampala Metropolitan Area. This heightened security comes just a day before the president embarks on his seventh term in office.

Increased Security Measures

Armed police and military personnel have been observed patrolling the city throughout the night. Their presence is particularly notable in areas that typically see minimal oversight. Officers have been stopping individuals, especially youth, for identity checks. Those unable to provide proper identification are being taken to local police stations.

Official Statements from Police

Police spokesman Mr. Rusoke Kituuma emphasized the importance of maintaining order during this significant national occasion. “We are deploying heavily to ensure a peaceful swearing-in event,” he stated. He urged the public to abide by the law during this celebratory time.

Traffic officers are also part of the increased security measures. They aim to ensure that drivers adhere to regulations, particularly as many will likely celebrate with alcohol during the public holiday. “We will not allow any impaired driving,” Mr. Kituuma declared.

Traffic Management Plans

To facilitate smooth travel for invited guests, a traffic route plan has been established. Key roads will be closed to general traffic on the day of the ceremony. The following measures will be in effect:

  • Access to Kololo Ceremonial Grounds will be via John Babiha Road (Acacia Avenue) through Elgon Terrace (Heroes Corner Gate).
  • General public access will be restricted on Ssezibwa Road from the Golf Course traffic lights to John Babiha Road.
  • Traffic from Entebbe International Airport to the Entebbe Express Highway, Northern Bypass, and Kololo will face disruptions.
  • Munyonyo Spur will also experience diversions, with vehicles redirected to Jinja Road for parking at Uganda Management Institute and Phaneroo Grounds.

Election Results Context

In the most recent general elections, President Museveni, representing the National Resistance Movement, received 71.65% of the votes, according to the Electoral Commission. The National Unity Platform leader, Mr. Robert Kyagulanyi, commonly known as Bobi Wine, followed with 22.6%.

As the swearing-in ceremony approaches, all citizens are encouraged to participate responsibly in the national celebrations while adhering to the outlined security and traffic regulations.
