Chinese EVs Make Canadian Debut as First Models Arrive

The landscape of electric vehicles (EVs) in Canada is changing. For the first time, Chinese-branded EVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have officially arrived in the country. Chery and Geely are leading this charge, with several vehicles making their way from China.
Arrival of Chinese EVs in Canada
Chery has shipped approximately 150 vehicles, including models from its Jaecoo, Omoda, and Exelantis brands. Following closely, Geely has imported 18 luxury Lotus Eletre SUVs, marking a significant step for Chinese automakers in Canada.
Import Tariffs and Market Entry
Canada recently reduced import tariffs on Chinese cars from 100% to just 6.1%. This decision, made in January, is coupled with an annual import cap of 49,000 vehicles. As a result, the transition to a new market is underway for Chinese brands.
- Chery Models Included: Jaecoo J5, Omoda 9, Exelantis ES
- Geely’s Model: Lotus Eletre
- Initial Shipment: Approximately 150 vehicles from Chery
- Geely’s Tariff Reduction Impact: Price of Eletre reduced by roughly 50%
Future Expansion Plans
The next phase for Chery involves shipping an additional 1,000 cars within the next three months. Plans are also underway for the establishment of 10 dealerships, expected to open by the end of June.
Lotus Eletre Certification
Geely’s Odyssey has already passed certification under the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The first six franchised dealerships commenced operations in March, with another six set to open by year’s end.
Implications for the U.S. Auto Market
The shift in Canada’s vehicle import policy has implications for the U.S. market. American buyers face rising prices and limited options, while Canadian consumers soon have access to more affordable Chinese-made vehicles.
The Canadian market welcomes a new era of electric and hybrid vehicles. With major industry players like Chery and Geely paving the way, the Canadian automotive landscape is poised for significant transformation.
