Russian military forces have started enhancing the defenses of their Project 21980 “Grachonok” anti-sabotage patrol boats. This measure comes amid a series of Ukrainian naval drone attacks targeting Russian vessels near the strategically important Kerch Bridge in occupied Crimea.
Drone Attacks Prompt Defensive Measures
Images released on May 11 by Ukrainian volunteer Serhii Sternenko unveiled modifications on these vessels. The modifications include protective metal frameworks and anti-drone netting. These changes aim to counter threats from Ukrainian uncrewed surface vessels and aerial drones.
The “Grachonok”-class boats play a crucial role in patrolling and securing waters around the Kerch Bridge. This bridge serves as a vital logistics link between occupied Crimea and mainland Russia.
Recent Ukrainian Strikes
On April 30, the Ukrainian Navy conducted a nighttime operation targeting two Russian vessels stationed near the Kerch Bridge. This attack reportedly damaged a “Grachonok”-class boat and a Project 12200 “Sobol” patrol boat. It resulted in nine Russian servicemen fatalities and two injuries.
Footage from the operation showed Ukrainian drones approaching Russian patrol boats swiftly before impact. These vessels were responsible for ensuring maritime security around the bridge.
Enhanced Defense for Russian Maritime Operations
In response to the recent strikes, Russian efforts to strengthen the defenses of their patrol craft in the Kerch Strait have become evident. The “Grachonok” boats are specially designed for anti-sabotage missions, harbor protection, and the defense of significant naval infrastructure.
Equipped with hydroacoustic systems, such as “Kalmar” and “Anapa,” these vessels are engineered to detect underwater threats. Their standard armament includes:
- 14.5 mm naval machine gun mounts
- DP-65A and DP-64 anti-diver grenade launchers
- Portable air-defense systems, including Igla and Verba missiles
Naval Assets and Strategic Importance
Russia’s Black Sea Fleet reportedly operates nine “Grachonok” boats, including one struck during the recent attack. Additionally, these vessels are utilized by the Federal Security Service (FSB) Border Service in southern regions.
The Kerch Bridge area has become a significant focus for Ukrainian maritime operations aimed at disrupting Russian military logistics. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) disclosed plans to target Russian naval assets, including radar systems, fuel infrastructure, and communications equipment.
The ongoing conflict highlights the escalating drone warfare tactics engaged by Ukraine, compelling Russia to bolster its maritime fleet defenses in the Black Sea.
