Celebrating 190 Years of Dedicated Service

This National Police Week, the Belleville Police Service (BPS) is proudly marking a significant milestone: 190 years of dedicated service. Celebrated from May 10 to 16, this event emphasizes the commitment of BPS officers and their partnerships within the community. The official anniversary will occur on June 18, 2026.

Recognizing Contributions to Community Safety

The provincial theme for Police Week 2026, “Protecting Ontario through Service,” highlights the essential role of police in ensuring community safety. This week provides an opportunity for BPS to honor its past, showcase achievements, and outline the future of policing in Belleville.

Events and Exhibits to Celebrate 190 Years of Service

Several initiatives and events are scheduled to celebrate the rich history of BPS:

  • Glanmore National Historic Site Exhibit: Opening on May 12, this exhibit, “190 Years of the Belleville Police Service,” features historic artifacts and explores the evolution of policing in the area. A free open house will take place from noon to 7 p.m. on that day. The exhibit continues until September 13 at 257 Bridge St. E.
  • On the Beat in Belleville: Also opening May 12, this exhibit at the Community Archives of Belleville and Hastings County showcases archival records and photographs related to BPS. It will be available until June 30 at 254 Pinnacle St.
  • Downtown Walking Tour: Launching on May 12, a new walking tour will highlight former police headquarters through historic photos and interpretive panels. Printed maps will be accessible at the Community Policing Office, 211 Front St., with a digital version available on BPS social media channels throughout 2026.
  • Belleville Police Service Open House: On June 18, the official 190th anniversary, residents can attend an Open House at BPS headquarters. Guided tours will be offered to showcase specialized units. Registration is necessary; further details will be provided soon.
  • Historical Highlights: In the lead-up to and following June 18, BPS will share historical facts and stories on social media to celebrate its legacy.
  • Merchandise and Publications: Commemorative items, including challenge coins and die-cast police cars, will be available for purchase. A special publication, created by the Hastings County Historical Society, will chronicle 190 years of BPS history, featuring over 200 pages, approximately 100 photos, and 600 names related to police service, including stories of bravery and daily experiences.

Join the Celebration

As Chief Murray Rodd stated, “Police Week is a time to honor the people and partnerships that make policing possible. This year is even more special as we mark 190 years of service to Belleville.” Residents are encouraged to celebrate this milestone, appreciate those who serve, and look ahead to the future of policing in the community.
