Copernicus Warns: Oceans Near Record Heat Levels Pre-El Niño

Recent data from Copernicus indicates that sea surface temperatures, excluding polar regions, nearly reached record highs in April 2024. Samantha Burgess, head of climate strategy at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, stated that it is only a matter of days before record sea temperatures are confirmed for May.
Pre-El Niño Conditions and Rising Ocean Temperatures
Typically, March is the warmest month for the oceans worldwide. Currently, record marine heat waves are affecting a vast area from the central Pacific to the coasts of the United States and Mexico. The El Niño phenomenon, occurring naturally in the Pacific Ocean, is expected to begin influencing global temperatures, winds, and climate as early as this spring.
- El Niño often leads to droughts in regions like Indonesia.
- Areas such as Peru may need to prepare for heavy rainfall.
Forecasts for El Niño and Climate Impact
The World Meteorological Organization has warned of increasing likelihood for the return of El Niño between May and July, as La Niña moderates. These predictions stem from observed temperatures in specific Pacific regions. While El Niño events occur naturally, they amplify the impacts of human-induced global warming.
Forecasts suggest that the upcoming El Niño could rival the powerful “Super El Niño” of 1997-1998. Climatologist Zeke Hausfather anticipates that the year 2027 may surpass the temperature records of 2024 due to the effects of this El Niño.
Implications for Future Climate Records
Burgess emphasizes that it’s too early to accurately predict the El Niño’s intensity, as spring forecasts often lack reliability. However, she agrees that this El Niño will be significant, with a strong chance of 2027 becoming the hottest year on record.
Current Oceanic Conditions
In addition to rising sea temperatures, Copernicus reports minimal recovery of Arctic sea ice during the boreal winter, with levels nearing historical lows. April 2026 has been ranked as the third warmest April globally when considering both land and ocean temperatures.
April also witnessed numerous extreme weather events, including tropical cyclones in the Pacific, devastating floods in the Middle East and Asia, and drought conditions in southern Africa.
