Local Nursery Celebrates 50 Years of Business and Community Impact

In Bellingham, Washington, Kent’s Garden and Nursery is marking 50 years of community engagement and business success. This milestone coincides with Mother’s Day and reflects on the nursery’s rich history since its establishment.

Celebrating 50 Years of Kent’s Garden and Nursery

Founded in 1976 by Kent Gerard, Kent’s Garden and Nursery has become a beloved local institution. Currently located at 5428 Northwest Road, the nursery is now under the ownership of Isaac and Laurie Burrous. They are committed to maintaining the legacy of this community-friendly business.

Community Connections and Roots

Isaac Burrous, who took ownership four years ago, has a personal connection to the nursery. He has heard numerous nostalgic stories from customers who visited as children and are now bringing their own families. This sense of community is a key part of the nursery’s identity.

Diverse Offerings and Expansion

Over the decades, Kent’s Garden and Nursery has significantly expanded its product offerings. In 1999, previous owners Ginny Crump and Nancy Henshaw diversified the inventory to include:

  • Annuals
  • Perennials
  • Berries
  • Fruit trees
  • Vegetables
  • Outdoor pottery
  • Art
  • Arbors and metal trellises

Additionally, Kent’s boasts Whatcom County’s largest selection of plants suitable for the Pacific Northwest. Isaac Burrous emphasizes that the nursery is a “5-acre plant paradise,” dedicated to inspiring local gardeners.

Exceptional Staff and Services

During peak seasons, the nursery employs 22 staff members who provide excellent customer service and plant care. Since 2022, they have also offered plant design and installation services, catering to customers seeking assistance without the commitment of a large landscaping project.

Anniversary Celebrations

To honor its 50th anniversary, Kent’s Garden and Nursery will host an event featuring refreshments, prize drawings, and a fundraiser for the Whatcom Long Term Recovery Group. This nonprofit organization aids residents affected by flooding incidents in Everson, Nooksack, and Sumas.

Visitors can explore Kent’s Garden and Nursery from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays, at 5428 Northwest Road in Bellingham.
