Tornado Watch Issued for Pensacola Area by NWS

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a tornado watch for the Pensacola area, including Escambia, Okaloosa, and Santa Rosa counties. This alert was announced at 9:50 a.m. on Thursday and will remain effective until noon.

Tornado Watch Details

The tornado watch indicates a possibility of tornadoes forming due to severe thunderstorm activity. This specific warning was made as a severe thunderstorm warning was also issued for southeastern Escambia and southern Santa Rosa counties until 10:45 a.m. on Thursday.

Severe Thunderstorm Warning Expiration

By 10:35 a.m., the NWS canceled the severe thunderstorm warning for Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. The storm had weakened and no longer posed an immediate risk to residents. However, gusty winds remain a concern.

Storm Characteristics

  • The severe thunderstorm was located near Elberta, Alabama, approximately 5 miles northeast of Foley.
  • Storm movement was eastward at 50 mph.
  • Potential hazards include gusts of up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.

Residents are advised to stay alert for possible tornado formation during periods of severe thunderstorm activity. The NWS cautions that tornadoes can develop quickly in these conditions.

Continued Weather Monitoring

In addition to the tornado watch, Pensacola is expected to experience storm activity late Thursday morning. Unfortunately, forecasts indicate that stormy weather could persist across the Panhandle through Sunday.

Residents should monitor local weather updates and heed warnings to ensure safety during this unsettled weather period.
