The National Weather Service (NWS) is currently investigating a possible tornado that may have touched down in west Mobile County, Alabama, on Thursday morning. This investigation follows reports of damage caused by a severe thunderstorm in the area.
Storm Damage Reported
The storm primarily impacted Alice Drive near Bellingrath Road in Theodore. Here, significant damage occurred as a large tree fell in a residential neighborhood, bringing down nearby power lines and leaving at least one home without electricity.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and nearby homes showed no signs of structural damage. Local resident Terry Alton described the storm’s sudden onset, recalling, “It was real heavy rain, and then you hear the wind picking up real bad.” He noted that this was the first time he experienced such weather in his 20 years living in the area.
Emergency Response
Alabama Power crews arrived at the scene about an hour later. They took immediate action to secure the downed power lines, ensuring safety in the area. SomPlus Inc. crews also helped by clearing the fallen tree.
Alton praised the response efforts, stating, “Alabama Power came out here first, checked it out, cut the wires so nobody gets electrocuted or nothing and everybody stays safe.”
Ongoing Investigation
While the dangerous weather has since passed, the National Weather Service continues its survey of the area to confirm the nature of the storm. Additionally, Mobile County remains under a Marginal Risk for severe weather as forecasts suggest the potential for further storms on Friday.
