Putin Criticizes NATO at Reduced Victory Day Parade

In a notable departure from tradition, this year’s Victory Day parade in Moscow featured no armoured vehicles or ballistic missiles. The event took place under heightened security measures, with military personnel marching across Red Square.

Putin’s Speech Highlights NATO Criticism

During his address, Russian President Vladimir Putin honored the sacrifices made by soldiers of the USSR during World War II. He emphasized that the legacy of those victors inspires current military operations, specifically pointing to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

“They are confronting an aggressive force armed and supported by the whole bloc of NATO,” Putin stated, referring to Russian soldiers engaged in the conflict. He lauded the bravery of these servicemen and women as they advance despite challenging circumstances.

Recognition of Russian Citizens

Putin extended his gratitude to various segments of Russian society for their contributions to the nation’s war efforts. He acknowledged the roles played by scientists, inventors, military correspondents, doctors, and teachers. “No matter how military tactics change, the future of the country is being provided for by the people,” he remarked.

Attendance and Event Highlights

  • Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko attended the parade.
  • Other leaders included Laos President Thongloun Sisoulith, Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, and Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
  • Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico met with Putin at the Kremlin prior to the event.

This year saw a significant decrease in the number of international leaders attending the celebration. The previous year’s 80th-anniversary parade featured 27 leaders, including prominent figures like China’s President Xi Jinping and Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Following Putin’s speech, cannon salutes marked the occasion before a military brass band played music. The event also included broadcasts showcasing soldiers on the front lines, highlighting the ongoing military operations.
