British Museum Transforms into Medieval Forest This Summer

This summer, the British Museum will transform into a medieval forest, creating a captivating experience for visitors. The museum is gearing up to showcase the Bayeux Tapestry, a remarkable piece of history returning to Britain after 900 years.

Bayeux Tapestry Exhibition Details

The Bayeux Tapestry chronicles the Norman Conquest of 1066. Thought to be crafted by nuns in Canterbury, this impressive 70-metre-long embroidered work will be on display starting in September 2023.

Tapestry of Trees Installation

In advance of the tapestry’s arrival, the British Museum will unveil a unique garden installation called “Tapestry of Trees.” This exhibit, designed by renowned garden designer Andy Sturgeon, will debut on May 16, 2023.

  • Installation Period: May 16 – June 2, 2023
  • Location: Front steps of the British Museum
  • Features:
    • Canopy of 37 silver birch trees
    • Woodland grasses and perennial species
    • Planters containing Guelder Rose, Hazel, Dog Rose, Foxglove, and Male Fern

The unique design will recreate the essence of medieval woodlands, bridging the past and present. The trees and plants will be adorned with hessian to reflect the tapestry’s texture and colors, matching the original blues, yellows, and reds.

Significance of the Installation

Sturgeon expressed his vision for the installation, aiming to create a bright and inviting atmosphere. He stated, “The museum is a vast monochromatic monolith, and I wanted the installation to be colourful and uplifting.” The trees will extend towards the street, welcoming visitors to enter.

The British Museum positions “Tapestry of Trees” as a prelude to its extensive public program related to the tapestry. This initiative will also lead into the proposed Visitor Welcome Pavilions and gardens expected by 2027.

With the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition set for 2026, London reaffirms its place as a cultural hub, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and art lovers alike.
