Governor Doubts Vijay’s Majority, Postpones Oath Ceremony

In a pivotal moment for Tamil Nadu politics, Governor R.V. Arlekar has postponed the oath ceremony for actor-turned-politician Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The decision comes as Vijay failed to substantiate his claim of having the support of 118 MLAs, the required majority to form the government in the state’s 234-seat Assembly.
TVK’s Efforts Fall Short
Vijay, who previously celebrated a significant electoral victory, securing 108 seats, was unable to convince potential allies to join his coalition. Key parties, including the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK), have stated they will not support the TVK, further complicating Vijay’s path to leadership.
Governor’s Firm Stance
Following two discussions with Vijay, Governor Arlekar firmly communicated that without written verification of majority support, he could not allow the formation of the government. Sources indicate that Vijay currently has backing from 116 MLAs, insufficient to meet the majority requirement.
- Majority required in Assembly: 118 MLAs
- Vijay’s current support: 116 MLAs
- Seats won by TVK in recent elections: 108 out of 234
This situation led to the IUML officially distancing itself from the TVK-led alliance, while AMMK insisted that the rival AIADMK should be permitted to govern.
Political Maneuvering Amidst Uncertainty
Amid the political intrigue, the Congress party has moved its five MLAs to Hyderabad. They are seeking to distance themselves from a perceived alliance with communal groups, particularly criticizing the BJP’s ties with the AIADMK.
Vijay’s party has also initiated discussions with other groups such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Communist parties, which previously allied with the DMK. However, these talks have yet to yield tangible results.
The Complex Landscape of Tamil Nadu Politics
The dynamics of Tamil Nadu’s political landscape are shifting, especially with the rift between the DMK and Congress. Accusations of betrayal have surfaced as both sides reflect on their past collaborations.
As Vijay continues his efforts to prove his majority, political observers remain skeptical. The BJP has publicly stated that they are not involved in the stand-off, emphasizing the democratic nature of the electoral process in the state.
With the stakes high and uncertainties looming, all eyes are on the unfolding events in Tamil Nadu as Vijay strives to secure his position. The ultimate question remains: will he manage to gain the necessary support to take the oath as Chief Minister?
