ENA Chief Calls Influencers to Promote Authentic African Stories

African social media influencers are encouraged to actively reshape global perceptions of the continent. This call to action comes amidst concerns about the ongoing misinformation and stereotypes that distort Africa’s image. The push was made during the African Social Media Influencers Summit held in Addis Ababa.
Summit Highlights the Power of Influence
Seife Deribe, CEO of the Ethiopian News Agency, emphasized the potential of African creators in promoting authentic narratives. He stated that social media platforms should reflect Africa’s achievements, culture, and progress.
“This gathering is more than a conference — it is a defining moment for Africa,” Seife announced to an audience of digital creators and media professionals. He stressed that Africa must take control of its narrative, emphasizing that external forces often perpetuate negative portrayals.
Theme of the Summit: Influence for a Better Africa
The summit’s theme, “Influence for a Better Africa,” serves as a directive for creators to use their platforms with intention. Seife urged influencers to focus on education, inspire youth, and promote unity across the continent. He acknowledged ongoing challenges such as misinformation, social division, and conflict that necessitate responsible digital leadership.
Setting a New Narrative
Seife encouraged the attendees to challenge outdated representations of Africa. He remarked, “The authors of Africa’s new story are in this room,” inspiring them to replace false narratives with stories rooted in truth and personal experiences. The summit seeks to redefine digital influence in Africa as an avenue for community building and social impact.
- Promote African culture
- Celebrate women’s leadership
- Reject exploitation in digital spaces
Furthermore, the initiative aligns with the vision of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who advocates for Africans to narrate their own stories rather than letting stereotypes define their identity.
Significance of Addis Ababa as a Host City
The choice of Addis Ababa as the summit venue carries symbolic weight, as the city is viewed as Africa’s political hub. According to Seife, it epitomizes the continent’s resilience and ambition, reflecting the development efforts that are part of a broader transformation story across Africa.
Despite the progress, Seife highlighted the persistent threats posed by misinformation and division. “Africa is no longer waiting for others to define its story,” he declared, reinforcing the need for proactive engagement in shaping its identity.
