Reform UK Sweeps All Seats in Hartlepool Council Election

Reform UK has achieved a remarkable victory in the recent Hartlepool Borough Council election, winning all available seats. This decisive outcome allows Reform UK to become the largest party on the council, effectively ending Labour’s majority.

Election Results Overview

A total of 12 seats were up for election on the council. The new composition is as follows:

  • Reform UK: 15 seats
  • Labour: 14 seats
  • Independent: 7 seats

The election results mean the council is now under no overall control. Discussions are necessary to establish the future administration.

Significant Losses for Labour

Labour faced significant defeats, with key figures like council leader Pamela Hargreaves among the six Labour councillors who lost their positions. Hargreaves commented on the results, stating the national party needs to initiate change, starting with the Prime Minister.

Calls for Leadership Change

Labour MP Jonathan Brash expressed his concerns over the election outcome, calling it a “terrible night” for Labour. He urged the Prime Minister to resign and suggested that Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer should also step down to allow for a broader leadership election.

Regional Context and Further Elections

This victory comes amid a backdrop of fluctuating control over Hartlepool Borough Council. Labour previously secured a majority in 2024, but Reform UK’s win signifies a notable shift.

The election results in Hartlepool coincide with other local elections in the North East, where Labour is expected to experience losses as well. Preliminary results indicate gains for the Green Party in Newcastle’s Byker ward, while Reform UK has also made inroads by winning three seats in Westerhope and Denton.

Turnout and Other Council Results

Turnout in Sunderland reached 40.5%, with initial results showing victories for both the Liberal Democrats and Reform UK. Meanwhile, in Gateshead, Reform UK leads with 15 seats, followed by the Liberal Democrats with 12 and Labour with 3 seats.

As the North East continues to witness changing political landscapes, the outcomes of these elections will play a critical role in shaping local governance for the foreseeable future.
