Authorities Recall Baby Formula After Toxin Discovery, Warning to Parents

Authorities have issued a recall for baby formula after the discovery of a dangerous toxin. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that The a2 Milk Company (a2MC) has voluntarily recalled specific batches of its a2 Platinum Premium USA label infant formula.

Details of the Recall

This recall affects infants aged 0 to 12 months and is particularly serious due to the presence of cereulide, a heat-stable toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. This toxin can cause severe vomiting and poses significant safety concerns for babies who depend on formula.

Affected Batches and Statistics

  • Total units affected: 63,078
  • Units sold to consumers: Approximately 16,428
  • Retail channels: Brand’s website, Amazon, and Meijer stores
  • Packaging: 31.7 oz tins
  • Use-by dates: July 15, 2026; January 15, 2027; January 21, 2027
  • Batch numbers: 2210269454, 2210324609, 2210321712

The formula was sold exclusively in the U.S. prior to its removal from sale. The FDA noted that the importation rights expired on December 31, 2025, leading to its discontinuation.

Health Precautions

While no illnesses related to the affected formula have been reported, parents are strongly advised to dispose of any affected products immediately. Alternatively, they may return the formula to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Background on Cereulide

Cereulide is known for being particularly resilient, able to withstand high cooking temperatures and thrive in acidic environments, making it difficult to eradicate once it contaminates food products.

This recall mirrors previous incidents this year when major brands such as Nestle, Danone, and Lactalis also recalled infant formulas due to potential cereulide contamination.

Consumers are urged to remain vigilant and check their purchased products to ensure their children’s safety during this time of heightened awareness regarding baby formula safety.
