Mysterious Object Intrigues B.C. Residents as It Drifts Through Night Sky

Residents across British Columbia (B.C.) and parts of Alberta were captivated by a peculiar sight in the night sky on May 5. Between 10:15 and 10:30 p.m. PT, many reported observing a large, white object gliding across the horizon before disappearing from view.
Mysterious Object Intrigues B.C. Residents
Witnesses took to social media to share their experiences. Videos emerged from communities ranging from Williams Lake to Prince George and beyond. Some witnesses were so intrigued that they pulled over to film the phenomenon.
Public Reactions and Speculations
- Sarah and Jared Siemens from Vanderhoof, B.C., were among those who saw the object. They said it was unexpectedly strange, especially since they had just been discussing the existence of UFOs.
- Ashley Megan thought it was the moon when she first spotted the object near New Aiyansh.
- Brooke Merritt described the sighting as “super weird” when she observed it in Hixon, south of Prince George.
Many people shared light-hearted theories about what they might have witnessed, with speculations ranging from a weather balloon to a SpaceX rocket. This playful curiosity seemed to bring a sense of community among the witnesses.
Expert Insights
Malhar Kendurkar, president of the Prince George Astronomical Observatory, suggested the sighting could be linked to the launch of SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. This rocket had launched from the Vandenberg Space Force Base just before 9 p.m. PT, deploying Starlink satellites. He noted that the phenomenon’s unusual appearance could be attributed to the “jellyfish effect,” where exhaust from the rocket expands in the atmosphere, creating a glowing cloud-like appearance.
Michael Unger, director of programming at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre in Vancouver, commented on the increasing frequency of such sightings. He noted that the presence of private satellites and drones in the night sky makes it harder to distinguish between natural and man-made phenomena.
Unger emphasized that these sightings not only spark curiosity but also enhance our understanding of the celestial activity occurring above us.
As technology allows for more capturing and sharing of these mysterious occurrences, B.C. residents remain intrigued by what they see in the night sky, prompting discussions about the unknowns that still exist in our universe.
