Canucks President Jim Rutherford Reveals Reasons for Stepping Down

Jim Rutherford, the president of hockey operations for the Vancouver Canucks, recently announced his decision to step down from his executive role. This transition is anticipated to take place after the entry draft in June, where he will also assist in hiring a new general manager.

Reasons for Stepping Down

Rutherford explained his decision by stating, “It’s time.” He expressed that he had contemplated this choice for about a year. Factors influencing his decision include a desire to be closer to his family, who are based in North Carolina, as well as to transition to an advisory role. He will remain involved with the Canucks and the NHL as an alternate governor.

At 77, Rutherford emphasized that his age was not a factor. He noted significant personal improvements in health and fitness, stating, “I feel better now than I did 20 or 25 years ago.” He is proud of the progress made within the team’s management structure and believes this is an opportune moment for a leadership change.

Future Involvement with the Canucks

As part of his advisory role, Rutherford intends to support Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini and his successor. His connection to the organization and its direction is evident, despite stepping back from daily operations.

  • Key Candidates for General Manager:
    • Ryan Johnson (Canucks Assistant Manager)
    • Evan Gold (Boston Bruins)
    • Ryan Bowness (New York Islanders)
    • Pierre Dorion (Former Ottawa Senators GM)

Despite recent struggles, including a last-place finish, many fans have not directed strong criticism towards Rutherford as compared to past administrations. However, he acknowledged challenges faced by the team, including internal friction among players, which he regretted not managing better.

Looking Ahead

Rutherford remains optimistic about the Canucks’ future. He believes the foundation is solid with a talented young group, which also includes experienced veterans. He anticipates that upcoming drafts could significantly impact the team’s success.

“There’s going to be some bumpy roads here for the next year, maybe two,” he stated. “But I do think that the team hit rock bottom this year, and it will be more competitive next season.”

Through his upcoming advisory role, Rutherford aims to lend his expertise and ensure a smoother transition for the new management. He is committed to supporting the organization and its dedicated fan base, wanting to foster an environment conducive to growth and success.
