Engineering Student Hosts Charity Tournament for Ronald McDonald House Support

A dedicated engineering student is making a significant impact through a charity tournament aimed at supporting the Ronald McDonald House of B.C. and Yukon. Hannah Searls, a 21-year-old from Hudson’s Hope, is a third-year civil engineering student at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). She has also gained valuable experience working during summers with the consulting firm McElhanney.

Inspired by Community Roots

Searls’ journey into engineering is deeply rooted in her upbringing in Hudson’s Hope. She credits her childhood experiences and the supportive community as motivators for her career choice. “The Peace River Regional District and Hudson’s Hope inspired me to become an engineer,” Searls stated.

Charity Tournament Details

The McElhanney Cares Charity Tournament has been a staple event for 17 years. This two-day event combines hockey, soccer, and slo-pitch tournaments to raise funds for Ronald McDonald House, which provides accommodations for families with children receiving medical care. The upcoming tournament is scheduled for May 29th and 30th in Kelowna.

Fundraising Initiatives

To enter the tournament, teams must raise a minimum of $1,000, supplementing it with independent fundraising efforts. Last year’s tournament raised an impressive $121,000, funding 484 nights for 40 families in need. Searls has exceeded her personal fundraising goal, raising $485 so far.
