AirAsia Secures Major Deal for 150 Airbus A220 Jets

Malaysia’s AirAsia has secured a significant purchase agreement for 150 Airbus A220-300 aircraft. This deal marks the largest single firm order placed for the A220 model, propelling the total orders beyond the 1,000 aircraft milestone. The announcement took place at Airbus’s Mirabel facility, attended by key figures including Tan Sri Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A, and Lars Wagner, CEO of Commercial Aircraft at Airbus.

Significance of the A220 Order

This agreement not only makes AirAsia a new customer for the A220 but also positions them as the launch customer for a new cabin configuration. This configuration will include 160 seats, increasing capacity by 10 seats through the addition of an overwing exit on each side of the aircraft.

Strategic Benefits for AirAsia

The Airbus A220 will complement AirAsia’s existing fleet, enhancing the airline’s operational strategy. It will facilitate access to destinations throughout ASEAN and into Central Asia, allowing larger aircraft to be allocated for longer flights.

  • Key Quotes:
  • “We have built AirAsia by making bold decisions at the right moment,” said Tony Fernandes.
  • “The A220 will provide an optimal platform for AirAsia,” noted Lars Wagner.

This acquisition underscores AirAsia’s long-term strategic vision and its ambition to establish a significant low-cost network. The A220’s design, which boasts low operating costs and a range suitable for diverse routes, aligns perfectly with AirAsia’s operational goals.

A220 Aircraft Features

The A220 is renowned for its combination of features that enhance efficiency and passenger comfort:

  • Capable of carrying between 100 to 160 passengers
  • Operates on routes up to 3,600 nautical miles (6,700 km)
  • Designed for low fuel consumption
  • Includes the widest cabin in its class

As of March 2026, Airbus has delivered 501 A220s to 25 operators worldwide. Additionally, the A220 can operate on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for a capability of 100% SAF by 2030.
