Hearn: Conor Benn Declines Fights with Three World Champions, Admits Limitations

Eddie Hearn revealed that Conor Benn has turned down three notable world title fights prior to signing with Zuffa Boxing. In February, it became public that Benn, known as “The Destroyer,” agreed to a one-fight deal with Dana White’s promotional company. This announcement marked the end of his association with Matchroom Boxing.
Benn’s decision follows his significant victory over Chris Eubank Jr. in November, avenging his prior loss from earlier in the same year. During both encounters, he fought at middleweight with a 10lb rehydration clause. His latest bout, held on the undercard of Tyson Fury versus Arslanbek Makhmudov, was against Regis Prograis, where he won by unanimous decision after ten rounds.
Unfolding Developments Post-Signing
After joining Zuffa, Benn secured a multi-fight contract, setting the stage for a potential clash with WBC welterweight champion Ryan Garcia later this year. His current standing as the top contender at 147lbs keeps the anticipation high.
Declined Fights and Notable Mentions
According to Hearn, Benn rejected opportunities to fight several prominent boxers, including:
- Lewis Crocker
- Rolando Romero
- Josh Kelly
Hearn detailed the discussions with Benn during a recent media huddle with Boxing News. Each proposed matchup failed to garner Benn’s interest. For example, when Crocker won the welterweight title, Hearn proposed a fight at the O2 Arena. Benn dismissed the idea, citing concerns about the rehydration issue.
Hearn also covered the potential bout with Romero, indicating a lack of enthusiasm from Benn, who characterized it as not a significant fight. Despite Hearn’s assertions about Benn’s capabilities and the allure of a world title fight in London, Benn remained resistant.
Even against Josh Kelly at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, Benn’s stance was clear: he was uninterested in that match as well. It appears Benn is aware of his limitations and prefers to seek larger financial opportunities rather than risking defeat for smaller purses.
Future Prospects in Boxing
As Benn prepares for his future endeavors, he has yet to demonstrate his prowess at the world level, particularly at 147lbs. His last fight in this weight class took place in 2022 when he defeated Chris van Heerden in the second round.
Benn’s journey continues as he seeks to establish himself among the elite while navigating the complexities of the boxing landscape and his own career expectations.
