As local news sources continue to face challenges, the importance of community journalism remains evident. Recently, a survey conducted by the Association of Austrian Newspapers (VÖZ) showcased the significance of local reporting. It revealed that 61% of respondents prefer print media to stay informed about political developments in their communities. This preference extends to both print and digital formats, with 70% of individuals consuming news through these channels.

- 51% stay informed about cultural and recreational offerings.
- 40% engage with news related to community organizations like local fire departments and sports teams.
These statistics underscore the deep-rooted connection residents share with their local media outlets. The “Niederösterreichischen Nachrichten” has maintained its position as the leading paid newspaper in Lower Austria. With approximately 735,000 individuals accessing its print, online, and newsletter services last year, the publication boasts a nationwide reach of 9.4%.
Continued Relevance of Print Media
Even in a digital era, print media remains significant. On average, 397,000 readers engaged with the 28 local editions of NÖN last year, comprising 331,000 readers specifically from Lower Austria. Editors Walter Fahrnberger and Daniel Lohninger emphasized their commitment to delivering reliable and high-quality information, highlighting the integral role of local journalism in upholding democracy.

As part of Local Journalism Day, the NÖN team engaged the community by sharing insights into their daily operations. Through short videos on Instagram, reporters expressed the importance of local journalism and the impact NÖN has on their lives and communities.
